Turning With the Ball - Key Points & Considerations

We've collated some of the key coaching points and things you may want to consider when setting up sessions based around turning.

Remember - getting all the coaching points across in one session is impossible - these are meant as a source of ideas that you can introduce slowly and layer on as the players' understanding and ability level increases over time.

Turning Circle Practice 1

This circle practice gives your players the chance to practice turning with the ball in a variety of ways and situations, firstly without pressure from opponents and then with defenders involved. It touches on all the key coaching points, from the actual skill involved in turning with the ball, to the awareness of where the players around you are and the communication required from your team mates to help you make the right decisions.

Turning Circle Practice 2

This circle practice is similar to the turning circle practice 1 but with individual teams working together and the addition of cues the players need to look out for that will trigger a change of role. This gets them thinking about their own movement off the ball based on what other players are doing. And of course it involves lots of turning with the ball, as that's the focus of the session!
